Breed Standard

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC) the French Bulldog is one of the world’s most popular small breeds. This is because of their playful, alert, and adaptable personalities coupled with a charming and affectionate nature. They make wonderful pets for single adults as well as families and require little exercise, which makes them ideal for apartments or limited space. Built like a bulldog with erect “bat” ears that give them their trademark appearance.

The French Bulldog originates from the mid 1800’s when a toy bulldog became popular in English cities. This toy sized bulldog was then brought to the the French countryside and crossed with other breeds, such as terriers, resulting in the erect bat-ears that they are known for today. They were first referred to as Bouledogue Français and became even more popular among French elite women. By the end of the1900’s the Frenchie was recognized in other parts of Europe and across the United States where devoted breeders maintained the erect ears as the ideal Frenchie type (AKC, 2022).

The AKC describes the French Bulldog as a muscular dog with heavy bone, a smooth coat, compact build and small structure. It has a square head with bat ears and roach back. The French Bulldog is a toy sized breed that is typically under 28lbs. You can learn more about the breed standard by clicking here (AKC, 2022).

At Fox Run Farm we strive to breed the healthiest French Bulldogs that we can. We know that these little dogs have higher rates of health risks including skin allergies, breathing restrictions and orthopedic abnormalities. All of our bulldogs are genetically DNA tested to screen for diseases common in this breed and some of our adults undergo additional tests and x-rays suggested by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA). For those that are not OFA certified our vet has thoroughly assessed them for any obvious problems and we only breed dogs that are free of any such issues.
